Discover Red Mountain

Located on a southwest-facing slope in south central Washington, a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Seattle, Red Mountain is one the smallest, warmest and most sought-after wine growing area in Washington State (and the world). Red Mountain’s name was derived from the color of the drooping brome or “cheatgrass” that grows on this hillside. During the spring, this grass turns a brilliant red color, hence the mountain’s name.

Relatively new to the fine wine scene, Red Mountain’s humbled beginnings date back to 1972, when pioneers John Williams and Jim Holmes of Kiona Winery, discovered this covered hillside that had no wells, roads, electricity, or life. Three years later in 1975, John & Jim gave birth and planted Red Mountain’s first vineyard with 10 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Chardonnay. Only 4,040 acres in size, Red Mountain achieved its official AVA designation in 2001. Today there are more than 15 wineries with a total of 2,300 acres planted, almost exclusively dedicated to red grapes (70% Cabernet Sauvignon).

Red Mountain is unmatched.  With an average daytime temperature of 90 degrees (during the growing season) and 7 inches of rain a year, it has a unique desert-like climate with a distinctive and complex combination of diverse soil types, created by wind-blown silt and sand over glacial outflow. Its superior quality grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are highly prized for their power, concentration, elegance and depth.

Red Mountain AVA is part of the Yakima Valley AVA, which is, in turn, part of the larger Columbia Valley AVA. For more information about RED MOUNTAIN visit www.redmountainava.com
